The following excerpts are from teacher's evaluations of some of the students that have been participating in the Mentoring program:

... I am pleased to see the most noticeable change that has occurred over the past year. He has become more responsible about his schoolwork and far more interested in attending college. ... He seems to be maturing and becoming more accountable to his teachers. He expresses admiration and gratitude when telling me about his mentor.

... has benefited greatly by her relationship with her mentor. She has had the chance to experience new pastimes with her, as well as to avail herself of information regarding college and a successful future. Moreover, she has thoroughly enjoyed the time that she has spent with her mentor. It has given her a much-needed break from her home routine, as well as a new focus.

... XXX's relationship with her mentor has been a bright light. It has afforded her a shoulder to cry on, a guide, a friend and a second mother. Mentoring has given XXX a focus and has shown her sides of life that she would not have known had this person not been present in her life.

I was struck by how painfully shy and insecure she was. Also, although her parents are extremely involved in her academic pursuits, XXX was struggling in her classes and was passive in her attempts to remedy this situation. I observed her creativity and dedication in my class, yet her effort was inconsistent. I recommended her for mentoring because I felt that she would benefit by an outside perspective and by the input of someone who could hopefully help her to overcome her timidity. I am delighted to report that XXX is coming out of her shell. She is more outgoing, and appears to be happier as well as more fulfilled. She has matured and is more focused on her future. Her parents are also very pleased with the results of her relationship with her mentor.

XXX is an overachiever, and suffers intensely when his grades are not what he would like them to be. I recommended him for mentoring because I felt that he would enjoy an outlet and a change of perspective. He reports that he is very happy with his relationship with his mentor, because it has opened up his eyes to the college preparation experience. He has started thinking about colleges and preparing himself, and he feels that he would not have done so had he not been able to partake of this relationship.
